With Evo 2016 only a few months away, Joey Cuellar reveals everything you need to know.
If you’re unfamiliar with Evo 2016, get familiar. It’s the biggest fighting game tournament and continues to grow year after year. It’s where the most hype matches occur across all disciplines of fighting games and dreams are made and broken.
Joey Cuellar and Mike Ross revealed all the secret details of Evo 2016 including full venue details and the full games lineup.
We’ll cut to the chase, the full games lineup is as listed below:
•Street Fighter V
•Super Smash Bros Melee
•Super Smash Bros WiiU
•Guilty Gear Xrd – REVELATOR-
•Mortal Kombat X
•Pokken Tournament
•Killer Instinct
•Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
•Tekken 7: Fated Retribution
Woah, Pokken you say?
Joey Cuellar explains the logic behind the list, saying “Evo likes to take chances. We don’t know if a game is going to do well, but we see that the potential is there. That’s what Pokken is. It might not be a feature on Sunday, but hey, we can try it and we’re definitely going to try it.” He goes on to say that it’s up to the community to support it, but they’re all about giving the community the platform to do so competitively.
As for the lack of Street Fighter IV, “We think [Street Fighter] IV had a great run, it lasted eight years and we had some great moments over those years but it’s run its course,” he said, continuing, “Even Capcom Pro Tour isn’t supporting it. We aren’t going to run dueling Street Fighter tournaments. We do it with Smash, but Smash doesn’t have a lot of crossover. We feel there’d be a lot of crossover with Street Fighter IV and V.”
This year, the event will be held in two locations. Friday and Saturday will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center while Sunday will be held at the Mandalay Bay Event Center with a 12,000 seat arena. Big venue change, but one that signals larger movements for the state of fighting games and Evo. “We’re trying to bring bigger and better things to Evo and this is all the first step in doing that,” says Cuellar. Bigger and better things indeed.
Don’t worry, you won’t be bunking at the Convention Center, accomodations are at the Westgate Hotel opposite the LVCC.
