2017 GSL Season 1 Grand Finals Survival Guide

Blizzard Entertainment

Event Summary

Over the last ten weeks, 32 of the world’s best StarCraft II players have waged battle in the epic Korean league known as the GSL. As the weeks progressed, 32 became 16, 16 became eight, and the eight became our last two contestants: soO and Stats.

Both of these players are intimately familiar with podium finishes. In 2014, soO became a worldwide sensation for his incredibly consistent placement as a GSL finalst; in that year’s three GSL seasons, he took second place in each one of them. soO is undoubtedly still eager to turn being a finalist into being a champion, and will be looking to do so on Saturday.

However Stats is just as hungry for the gold. At the recent IEM Season XI World Championship, Stats took second place. At the IEM just prior to that, in Gyeonggi, Stats yet again the tournament’s runner-up. He also reached the semi-finals in his preceding three premier tournaments, including the 2017 WCS Global Finals. To put it simply: Stat’s string of Top 4 finishes is a staggering accomplishment in StarCraft; yet victory still eludes him. Stats has never been crowned champion in any premier event despite his incredible achievements. This weekend, we can rest assured that the full force of his determination will be brought to bear upon soO.

Without a doubt, this GSL finals will be one of the most compelling events of the year if only because of how intensely each of these players want the title of GSL Champion. The truth of the matter however, is that only one of them can have it – and the victor will find themselves rewarded handsomly with not just the title, but also 40,000,000 KRW, 4,000 WCS Korea Points, and a seat at the 2017 WCS Global Finals. Who will it be?
