The Major runner-ups are coming to Oakland – welcome, Immortals!

IEM

We are happy to welcome Immortals as the eighth invited team to Intel® Extreme Masters Oakland! The Brazilians will join FaZe Clan, G2 Esports, SK Gaming, Astralis, Cloud9, Team Liquid, Gambit Esports and four other teams in the battle for the IEM Oakland championship, a share of the US$300,000 prize pool and a win counting towards the Intel® Grand Slam.

This will be Immortals’ second appearance at IEM Oakland. Last year, they finished second in their group and proceeded to the quarterfinals where they lost to later tournament champions, Ninjas in Pyjamas. Immortals also competed at IEM World Championship Katowice, where they finished in the top 4 after a win against North in the quarterfinals and a loss against FaZe in the semis. The team’s most significant accomplishment, however, was their performance at the PGL Major Kraków this past July. With a 3-2 score in the Swiss group stage, they moved on to the playoffs and took wins against BIG in the quarterfinals, and against the home favorites, Virtus.pro, in the semifinals. The grand finals came down to the Brazilians and Gambit Esports, with the series needing to have all three maps played out to determine a winner. In the end, the Major championship was Gambit’s to take, but Immortals ended the tournament impressing both teams and fans alike.

All these results are incredibly impressive considering the team has been through many changes over the last 12 months. A key standout is the loss of FNX as a crucial member of the team yet Immortals are staying as consistent as ever.

We cannot wait to see what Immortals will show us at IEM Oakland. Will they go all the way and lift the trophy in the Oracle Arena?

Winning IEM Oakland counts towards the Intel Grand Slam: a new system that awards a US$1,000,000 prize to the team that has won four out of the last ten $200,000 events held between DreamHack and ESL. So far, SK Gaming and G2 Esports are in the lead with their wins at the recent ESL One Cologne 2017 and DreamHack Masters Malmo respectively, with the next tournament being ESL One New York. IEM Oakland comes in as the fourth event.
