Starting off with a core roster comprised of former Misfits players, the Mayhem got off to a rocky start in the first season of the Overwatch League. During Stage 1, the Mayhem suffered six shutouts and won just once, against Shanghai—the league’s only winless team across the entire season. Florida improved a little in Stage 2, winning a total of three games. A 2-8 record in Stage 3 left the team near the bottom of the season standings, but Florida was at least showing signs of improvement by winning more maps in their matches. Stage 4 was a bookend to Stage 1, as the team’s lone win was once again over the Dragons. The Mayhem finished the season with a 7-33 record, a -78 map differential, and in 11th place overall.

Keys to Success

Overwatch League analyst Josh “Sideshow” Wilkinson offers his thoughts on what Florida needs to focus on this season:

  • 2019 must begin an upward trajectory for the Florida Mayhem. Their management made the biggest changes in the league, keeping only one player from the original roster and bringing in a mix of primarily Korean talent. Their scouting has to have been excellent. These new names have not been guaranteed performers in the past, so fans of Florida have to hope that general manager Matt Akhavan, assistant general manager Scott “Bearhands” Tester, and head coach Hyun-Jin “r2der” Choi have discovered hidden talents.
  • The support backline was a significant issue for the Mayhem during the inaugural season, and they have rightly made improvements this year, but they certainly haven’t pushed the envelope. Florida needs Hyeon-Woo “Hagopeun” Jo and Jun-Su “Kris” Choe to hit their former peaks for this to be a strong backline in the Overwatch League.
  • Jeong-Woo “Sayaplayer” Ha is the clear star on this team, known for his unbelievable Widowmaker and McCree play, and often able to clutch fights single-handedly. Florida management would be advised to get him some pre-emptive back surgery—he’s going to be hard-carrying this team to wins at times with his insane individual talent.
  • The Mayhem are in the Atlantic Division, which seems to be the weaker of the two, overall, but with three extremely strong teams in London, New York, and Philadelphia. Disregarding these three, the Mayhem should try to capitalize on the fact that they play the rest of the Atlantic teams twice each in the season, giving them more opportunities to snatch results from teams potentially at the bottom of the overall standings. March 17 in particular could be a pivotal day for Florida, as they wrap up Stage 1 by facing the Washington Justice.
